As I walked from my car onto the sidewalk, a woman called out to me: "I see you're from British Columbia. We live near there." The car next to me had a British Columbia vanity plate and she thought I belonged with that vehicle.
After letting her know I wasn't, we engaged in a conversation that brought out the fact she had just "retired" and she and her husband were wintering in the Phoenix area and summering outside Seattle near the Canadian border. I talked about how long we are all living and inquired what she planned on doing now that she retired from a job but of course hadn't retired from life.
She said she planned on playing tennis but had no plans to do anything else and hasn't really thought about it. Hadn't really thought about it! She said she was 65...so if she lives to 100 that's 35 more years...if she lives to 120 that's 55 more years...and all she has planned is to play tennis.
Whether we want to of not, the statistics are rolling in. People are living longer. Maybe you don't envision yourself living to 100 or beyond but what if you do? It's time to wake up and make a difference in the world. Perhaps, you retired from work that you did not love, so all you think you want to do is nothing of substance. (Consider changing visual of work as something not loved, to work as something we do love.)
I suggest we use the word retired with another set of words. Let's say: "I've retired from XYZ and now I'm going to help myself and others by creating a business that adds joy to the world or by volunteering my time and talents to help others who need help today."
When we do this, when we add action after the word retired, we are sending a message to our body, mind and spirit to keep us active and alert rather than sending the message that we are on our way to frailty and possible dementia. Research now shows that some dementias are caused by lack of physical exercise and lack of learning new things. When we work, when we engage in conversation with new people, when we volunteer, when we learn to do something we never did before, we are not retired. We are living a life of meaning through this new opportunity of longevity. Use this time wisely.
Change your words. Change your thinking. Raise your vibration. Raise the vibration in our global world. Don't just retire rather retire AND live a life of excellence.
